Description:  A stunning tour taking in the Snæfellsnes peninsula and most of Iceland´s mountainous 830 mile long Highway 1 or ´Ring Road´ which skirts the entire coastline, with the exception of the West Fjords.

Discover Iceland´s unique natural wonders including magnificent waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers - including Vatnajökull - spouting geysirs and bubbling mud pots, weird lava landscapes, rich birdlife and, in high summer, the Midnight Sun.

Duration: 15 DAYS including flying time.

   

Day 1:

Arrive Keflavik Airport and transfer by airport bus to your hotel (32 miles).

1 night REYKJAVIK - Hotel Leifur Eiriksson (BB) 

Days 2 & 3: 

Collect Avis hire car and head north on the Ring Road via the wide Kollafjördur and under the Havalfjördur by subsea tunnel to Borgarnes. Through the Myrar region and Eldborg lavafield before driving through the Snæfellsnes mountain range to Stykkisholmur on the northern shore of the peninsula (107 miles).

2 nights STYKKISHOLMUR - Hotel Stykkisholmur (HB)

Days 4 & 5: 

Continue along the northern shore of the peninsula to the Hrutafjördur to rejoin the Ring Road. Through the wide Vidi valley via Blönduos and through moorland and valleys to Akureyri, known as the ´capital of the north´, and located on the shores of Iceland´s longest fjord, Eyjafjördur (225 miles).

2 nights AKUREYRI - Hotel Harpa (BB)

Days 6 & 7: 

Onwards on the Ring Road via Godafoss (waterfall of the Gods), the pseudocraters at Skutustadir and the weird lava formations at Dimmuborgir to Reykjahlid, beautifully situated next to Myvatn (62 miles).

2 nights REYKJAHLID - Hotel Reynihlid (HB)

Days 8 & 9: 

Continuing eastwards on the Ring Road via the Mödrudalur valley and mountain ranges to Egilsstadir ´capital´of East Iceland (102 miles).

2 nights EGILSSTADIR - Guesthouse Egilsstadir (HB)

Days 10 & 11: 

Onwards following the coastline around numerous fjords via Höfn and in sight of majestic Vatnajökull, Europe´s largest glacier. Westwards around the Hornafjördur, before reaching the wonderful glacial lagoon of Jökulsarlon with its huge icebergs and from where boat trips are possible. Through the vast Breidamerkursandur sand area passing Iceland´s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnukur (2119 m), to Freysnes, next to Skaftafell National Park (230 miles).

2 nights FREYSNES - Fosshotel Skaftafell (HB)

Days 12 & 13: 

Westwards on the Ring Road through the vast black sand deserts of Skeidarasandur via Kirkjubæjarklaustur then through the vast Eldhraun lava fields with its pseudo-craters at Alfaver before reaching the Myrdalssandur desert near Vik, Iceland´s southernmost town (91 miles).

2 nights VIK - Hotel Lundi (HB)

Day 14: 

Continuing on the Ring Road westwards to Selfoss via the two impressive waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Northeast via the Kerid explosion crater and the world-famous Geysir area to spectacular Gullfoss waterfalls. Return to Reykjavik via the beautiful historical site of Thingvellir (UNESCO) where the North American Eurasian tectonic plates are still moving apart, then through the Mosfellsheidi moors to drop off hire car (210 miles).

1 night REYKJAVIK - Hotel Leifur Eiriksson (BB)

Day 15:

 Airport bus from hotel to Keflavik Airport (32 miles).
