- Explain to the pupil how you will instruct use of the pedal. I.E. ‘Cover’ the gas, if you want them to hold their foot over it, set the gas, more gas, less gas, off the gas etc.. Using the word ‘gas’ is far easier and quicker than accelerator.

- As with the gas pedal, explain how you will instruct use of the brake pedal. I.E. Cover the brake, a little brake, more brake, less brake, off the brake.

- Explain to the pupil how you will instruct use of the pedal. I.E. Cover the clutch, clutch down, clutch slowly up. The ‘biting point’ will be explained in LESSON 2.

- You can tell the pupil how you will instruct them to change gear by using the words “Select first”, “Select second” etc..

- Inform the pupil your instructions will be “Apply the hand-brake” and “Release the hand-brake”.

- At this stage you should show the pupil the other ancillary instruments and controls such as windscreen wipers, windscreen washers, speedometer, heater controls etc.. These can vary considerably from car to car and so cannot be detailed here. Show the pupil the warning lights and explain what they mean.

- When driving with the pupil, always be sure they know which blind spot they will need to check well before making any manoeuvres.
