Crossroads 3. Approach On Minor

Before taking this lesson, please read and agree to our Terms and Conditions

The main point to remember about approaching crossroads from a minor road, is actually noticing the junction is there! Watch the following video:

Crossroads approach

Notice how the lack of buildings or trees opposite the approach could make it seem as though there is no junction there? A distracted driver may not notice the signs and simply drive straight across it without looking or slowing down. It happens often - particularly in circumstances where vision might be impaired, such as at night or in poor weather.

Turning left

Do your approach routine as you would for a normal t-junction. Look to see if there is a vehicle signalling to turn right from the opposite side of the junction. If there is, you have right of way over them but once the main road is clear and you are ready to move, make sure they understand your right of way and have waited for you. Make eye contact. Many drivers are not sure about priorities at crossroads - you need to be aware of this.

Crossroads. Left from the minor road.

Straight ahead.

Approach the junction using your MSPSL although, as you are going straight ahead, you don't signal. Make sure the main road is clear andthe road opposite is clear before crossing. If there is an obstruction in the opposite road, wait at the junction so that you don't have to stop on the main road - this could be dangerous and cause inconvenience to other road users.

If a vehicle opposite is signalling to turn right across you, you have right of way when the main road is clear. However, don't assume they will wait for you. Make eye contact to be sure you both understand each other's intentions.

Turning right.

Again, approach the junction using your MSPSL. When the main road is clear, check to see if there are any vehicles opposite who are turning left or going straight across. Either way, you do NOT have priority and you should wait for them to go before moving yourself. Make eye contact with the other drivers to be sure you all understand each other.
