S1 - Try to find a place with quiet junctions where you can drive around the block without hitting a busy road. By doing that, you can start with left turns, then you can turn the car around and work on right turns. If the pupil is finding steering a little difficult, it may be a good idea to take them to a quiet car park first to get them used to doing lots of steering before dealing with tight junctions. At this stage you should still drive the pupil to and from your home if there are any busy roads to negotiate. It’s very important pupils are not asked to deal with busy roads before they are ready. Quite apart from the obvious danger, pupils quickly lose confidence if asked to do things beyond the stage they have learned.

S2 - When directing the pupil it’s very important to give clear directions and to help them understand what type of junction they are looking for. You need to look much further ahead than you may be used to in order to allow time for the pupil to react to your instructions.
Inform the pupil that when you are coming to a T-junction you will use the words “At the end of the road turn....(left or right)” and when you are on a major road and you want them to turn into a minor road you will use the words “At the next junction turn... (left or right)”. This may seem a small detail but it helps the pupil enormously by giving them more time to decide on their course of action and makes for a much calmer atmosphere in the car. Also these are the words the examiner will use so it gets the pupil used to hearing them.

S3 - Say the routine out loud for the pupil as they approach the junction. As they become more used to it, say it only when they are forgetting until they are doing it completely on their own.

S4 - When you are driving around generally, discuss types of junction with the pupil. Help them to recognise open and closed junctions and how to look for them.

S5 - As with the approach and turn above, help your pupil by saying the MSPSL routine on approach until they have become proficient at doing it themselves.

S7 - As with the approach and turn above, help your pupil by saying the MSPSL routine on approach until they have become proficient at doing it themselves.
