Moving Away At An Angle
Before taking this lesson, please read and agree to our Terms and Conditions
Sometimes you will need to move away when you have a vehicle, or some other obstruction, close to the front of the car. This will limit your vision to the front and rear and make it more difficult for other road users to see you.
Moving out from this position requires greater care. Here's how to do it:
Select 1st gear and find your clutch biting point.
Do your 360 degree observation.
Signal right. This is one occasion we always signal when moving out because there may be something you haven't seen due to the limited vision.
Move the car very slowly forward and steer hard right to avoid the vehicle in front.
As the front of the car creeps out, look behind over your right shoulder - this is because the angle of your car renders your exterior mirror useless as all you can see through it is the kerb.
As the car creeps further out, lean forward and look ahead, then look over your right shoulder again.
When the car is far enough out for you to see clearly up and down the road, move away as normal if it's clear.
Remember to cancel your signal.
