Supervisor Tips
Before taking this lesson, please read and agree to our Terms and Conditions
S1 - Before the lesson, ask the pupil to read the section of the Highway Code relating to safe stopping places. To practice this lesson, drive the pupil somewhere quiet and straight. It’s a good idea to practice the following with the engine off first so the pupil knows what to expect - particularly with regards to the stopping routine. Decide before moving away where you are going to stop.
S2 - The pupil should practice this manoeuvre several times to help gain confidence controlling the car. Unless you are very lucky, you are unlikely to find a straight piece of road which is that long! You may need to deal with a junction or turn the car around to go back the way you came. My advice is to swap places and turn the car around yourself. The pupil is unlikely to have the ability to turn around themselves at this stage and dealing with junctions before being properly taught can be extremely dangerous.
S3 - Find a quiet place to practice clutch control on the flat, uphill and downhill. In particular, find the clutch biting point on a hill, release the handbrake and ask the pupil to 'hold' the car still using just the clutch. When it is still, ask them to press the clutch very slightly to let the car roll back a little and then stop it by raising the clutch a little again. Then they can raise the clutch a little more to move the car forward slightly and stop the car by pressing the clutch again. These are all tiny movements which help the pupil get the 'feel' of the clutch in different conditions. Don't do it for long, though, because the clutch will burn out!
