Driving test - major or minor faults?
We are often asked if there is a list of ‘minor’ and ‘major’ faults for the UK driving test.
There is no list as such, because a great deal depends upon the circumstances at the time the fault occurs. But here’s a general guide:
Minor faults (also known as ‘driving faults’) are faults which the candidate has committed during the test but which haven’t caused danger, or were unlikely to have caused danger, to other road users at the time. Examples of these would be:
Failing to check mirrors when changing speed
Selecting the wrong gear
Touching (not mounting) the kerb when reversing
Driving too slowly for the conditions
Hesitation at junctions
Poorly timed signal
Poor judgement when meeting traffic
Poor road position
That’s to name just a few - but it’s important to remember that any of these minor faults can instantly become serious or major faults if they cause another vehicle to change speed or direction or if they cause danger to any other road user.
