20mph speed limits good for the environment? Maybe not.
As a general rule, it makes sense that the slower you drive, the less C02 you will pump into the air. But, according to new research by the AA, 20mph speed limits on the wrong roads can increase emissions by up to 10%.
The research shows that, on average, petrol car fuel consumption can increase by 5.8 mpg on longer and free flowing 20mph urban streets. Even speed humps can increase fuel consumption by as much as 47% when installed on 30mph roads. The research is part of the AA’s Fuel for Thought campaign.
So, what price safety? It seems it doesn’t matter what you do, you just can’t win.
