There are many methods of doing this manoeuvre of which this is only one. I use it because it’s easy to remember how much steering you need 1-2-1. One turn to the left, two to the right, one to the left. Simple.

However, each car is slightly different and you may find that you need to slightly alter the points of turn I have described above in order to get it right every time. Remember as well that changing the speed of the car or the speed of your steering will alter the angle the car comes in at - try to practice being consistent in both and make allowances for speed differences when reversing up or down hill. Trial and error is fine, as is lots of practice.

Sometimes this manoeuvre seems difficult at first but keep practicing and you will succeed.

Well done. In this lesson you have learned or practiced:

  • How to park parallel to the kerb.
  • Co-ordination of speed and steering
  • Proper observation when parking
  • Clutch control
  • Brake control
