8. Reversing

Before taking this lesson, please read and agree to our Terms and Conditions

Suggested length - 1 1/2 - 2 hours.

Introduction:

The object of this manoeuvre is to reverse around a corner (usually into a junction) in full control using proper observations. By full control, they mean keeping the car slow but moving (unless you need to stop for other traffic), keeping reasonably smooth and keeping a reasonable distance from the kerb all the way around - approximately half a metre.

If I had a pound for every pupil who told me they heard this is the most difficult manoeuvre and one they should fear, I’d be a rich man. But the truth is, anyone can do it - it just takes a little learning and plenty of practice. By a little learning, I mean making sure you can control the car at slow speed before attempting this manoeuvre - most people go wrong by simply trying it before they have the necessary skill to do it.

So, before attempting this manoeuvre make sure you have mastered clutch control, brake control and reversing very slowly and smoothly in a straight line. If you can do these with relative ease, you are ready to learn reversing round a corner to the left and reversing around a corner to the right - either of which you can be given in your test.

Supervisor tip - 1

In this lesson you will learn:

  • The left reverse
  • The right reverse
