And Road Markings

Before taking this lesson, please read and agree to our Terms and Conditions

Below is a diagram of a more complex junction. Here the large roundabout is surrounded by a series of mini-roundabouts. You need to take extra care because vehicles can be travelling in either direction around the large roundabout. Assess the situation carefully at each mini-roundabout and try to make sure you see direction signs well in advance.

Study this diagram carefully before going on the road and try to work out which way you would go round each mini-roundabout depending on the direction you want to go. Remember the ‘give way to the right’ rule at each mini-roundabout.

Below is a video showing dedicated lanes and hatched markings at a roundabout. Note that turning left at the roundabout, you will not have to stop and give way to the right - this is because cars on the roundabout must not cross the hatched markings as they exit the roundabout.

This is what it looks like approaching this left turn from within the car.

Roundabouts and road markings

When you are a passenger, try to look at as many different types of roundabout and junction as possible - it's good to study them when you don't have to worry about controlling the car. Note how road markings are there to help you and to help traffic flow- react to them in good time. Try to learn to spot road markings in good time.

Finally, don't just try to learn the junctions on your test route - if your instructor is doing this, find a new one! The important thing to remember is that, after you've passed your test, you will need to be able to deal with any junction, even if you've never seen it before.
