Young Marmalade

Paperwork

When you hand over the vehicle, remember you are also tranferring legal ownership and this must be properly recorded, otherwise you may find yourself in trouble if the new owner commits some offence and the car is still registered to you.

The most important document is the V5, sometimes called the registration document - used to be called the ' log book' in the old days. The document explains in detail what to do when transferring ownership to the new keeper - follow these steps carefully.

The buyer, or new keeper, should retain section 10 of the document as proof they are the new owner until the new V5 arrives. It is your responsibility as the seller to send the V5 off to the DVLA so they can change the ownership from you to the new keeper - don't forget to do this, otherwise the DVLA will have no idea ownership has changed and will continue to send any fines or tickets the new owner incurs to you!

Remember to hand over all other documentation associated with the car such as the MOT and service history.
