The Viewing And Test Drive
It goes without saying that the buyer will want to view and test drive your car. Here are some pointers to help it go smoothly.
- Try to be available when they want you to be. If you can, it's a good idea to take a couple of days off work when the ad appears - that way, really keen buyers can view it straight away. Remember you are in competition with other similar cars for sale, if they can be viewed immediately and yours can't, you may lose the sale.
- If your house is difficult to find, let the buyer know and give directions. If they can't find you, at worst they give up and at best they arrive flustered and in a bad mood.
- Remember to have the car looking its best. Click 'here' for information on how.
- When the buyer is viewing, smile and be friendly. Answer all questions honestly and without hesitation. Remember that much of their decision is based on what they think of you as well as the car. It's not nice buying from grumpy people who don't seem to know anything about the vehicle.
- Be prepared to negotiate the price. Bargaining is expected. But don't be presured to let the vehicle go for a price which is obviously below market level.
- Now we're going to shout at you. Insurance! Your buyer will want to test drive the car, so make sure there is suitable insurance. It is your responsibility to ensure the buyer is insured to drive your car during a test drive. Check with your insurance company to find out if another driver is insured to drive your car - it is unlikely they will be - so you must ask to see the buyer's insurance certificate before the drive. Do not be shy about asking this and do not allow a test drive without proper insurance. Remember it is most likely their insurance will only cover third party risks - this means any damage to your car will not be covered. Don't just take their word they are insured, if they do not have the documents, drive the car yourself. If they are offended and walk away, tough.
- Make a note of the driver details and times of all test drives. This will be handy as proof they were driving in the event of being caught in a speed camera.
