Theory
Before you can book your practical driving test, you will have to pass a theory test.
The test consists of two parts - part one is multiple choice questions, part two is hazard perception.
For information about what will happen on your theory test, click 'here'.
Why must you take a theory test?
A large part of being a safe driver is understanding road markings and signs, knowing the laws of the road such as speed limits and knowing the legal requirements of car ownership. In addition, it is important to have an understanding of how to spot potential danger - practicing for the theory hazard perception helps inexperienced drivers learn how to predict a potential or 'developing' hazard before it causes an accident.
Preparing for your Theory Test:
To prepare for both parts of your test, there are plenty of books and DVDs available. Feel free to use our store to buy these aids. We recommend you choose material published by the DSA (such material is marked 'DSA') as these are the people who set the test itself. You will also need a copy of the Highway Code.
Learning for the theory test can feel quite tedious, a good way around this is to buy an interactive DVD which allows you to learn by taking mock theory tests - this is a far more entertaining way than just reading. However, there's no getting around the fact you have to learn road signs etc., and sometimes the only way to do this is to read up on them. Your driving instructor should help you with the hazard perception part of the test. This is because you will be able to learn what is required as you are driving - the more experience you have as a driver, the easier the hazard perception element will seem.
In addition, the DSA has developed a multi-media training resource for the hazard perception element. We highly recomend this as it can be used in conjunction with the learning you will get from your driving instructor.
When you receive the confirmation letter after booking your first theory test, you will also receive a DVD titled 'Are You Ready' - watch this to make sure you are!
When should you take the test?
The current approximate pass rate for the theory test is 60%.
If you have prepared properly for the test, there really is no reason to fail. There is no need to book it until you are ready. Make sure you are consistently getting passes in your mock tests and take advice from your driving instructor. Getting as much driving experience as you can will always help you get through.
